Penn State New Kensington - located only 25 miles outside of the beautiful Pittsburgh, PA - is hiring a new Assistant Coordinator for Academic & Career Success. This person serves as an academic advisor for incoming & undecided students, works extensively with Career Services programs, and helps with Learning Support. It’s a fantastic opportunity for an entry-level professional.

Approximately 700 students matriculate at the New Kensington campus and are studying in 15 bachelor and associate programs. The Coordinator for Academic and Student Success will assist the Associate Director for Academic Advising, Associate Director for Career Services, and the Learning Center Coordinator by providing academic and career advising, planning and developing special events and programs, and managing office operations. Duties include the following: provide professional academic advising to DUS and Provisional students, make appropriate referrals, and ensure confidentiality and maintenance of student records; guide students in course selection and scheduling, assist in resolving academic problems, and monitor student progress; coordinate and develop Career Services sponsored events and programs (e.g. career fairs, networking programs, etiquette dinners, workshops); assist Career Services with development and management of specialized experiential-learning initiatives (e.g. professional development programs for engineering students, sponsored internships program, regional networking conferences); coordinate Success Center office operations including arranging staff meetings and ensuring the completion of routine tasks; develop and maintain digital presence for the Success Center including web pages and social media; assist Learning Center Coordinator with administrative duties related to Disability Services and Tutoring (e.g. producing accommodation letters, obtain learning support materials and instructing students on their use, managing testing room); supervise, train, and develop paraprofessional training for student workers; assist with the development and coordination of the New Student Orientation Program; provide direct career counseling and support services to students to include assessing career interests and preparation for student internship and job search (resume reviews, interviewing skills, assessment of employment opportunities and resources, etc.) Typically requires a Master's degree or higher plus one year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Master's degree must be in Student Affairs, Adult Education, or a closely related field. This position requires knowledge of student development, career services, and academic advising theory. The incumbent must be able to apply this theory to daily interaction with students and program development. The incumbent must be able to interpret and apply university policies and procedures to practice. This position will take direction from and is accountable to the Associate Director for Academic Advising, Associate Director for Career Services, and the Learning Center Coordinator. Some aspects of coordination of programs will require self-initiative and independence. Some decisions will be made in consultation with Success Center leadership. This position is a central part of a team. The incumbent must be able to work well in this capacity and will be able to support team decisions. The incumbent must be able to write and speak clearly and accurately and may create documents for distribution and act as a liaison between students, faculty, staff, campus, and university officials. The incumbent must be able to think critically and solve problems within the ethical and professional standards set forth by the University and relevant professional organizations (e.g. NACADA and NACE). This position may provide input for improving processes and may encounter unusual and difficult problems. The incumbent will be expected to keep current with professional standards and best practices. Occasional evening and weekend hours will be required. This is a one-year, fixed-term renewable appointment.
