Academic and Career Counselor
Johnstown Academic Success Center - Pennsylvania-Johnstown - (21003540)

The Academic Counselor provides designated services from the range of programs provided by this unit, which include: academic counseling programs for special populations including First at Pitt-Johnstown for first-generation students, Engineering Student Support, First-Year Success Program, and Great Outcomes in Learning program; Tutoring Services, including supplemental instruction; and Academic Advising for Undeclared and Exploratory students, The Academic Counselor will carry an instructional load of Major & Career Exploration and Foundations of Learning, will manage a student advisee load, help initiate outreach to students in academic jeopardy, provide academic counseling, and will assist with tutoring services, and other support services. This individual works to build relationships with students, individually and collectively, that will assist them in: developing self-awareness and self-understanding, identifying problems and decision-making skills, setting individual goals; generating and evaluating alternatives, and selecting an appropriate course of action, including making referrals as appropriate. Establishes and maintains contact with various campus departments to stay current on campus policies and procedures and to ensure quality service provision for students. Supports retention efforts and promotes productive solid working relationships with students, staff, and faculty. Assists with training workshops for faculty advisors and staff. Due to this position’s function and or job title, this position has been designated a Campus Security Authority for Clery Act reporting. If this individual becomes aware of a Clery reportable crime they must contact campus police immediately and report the crime.

Master’s Degree in Student Affairs, Counseling or a related field. Experience in providing academic advising or support in an educational setting and/or student affairs experience.. Instructional experience is necessary for teaching duties. The individual must possess demonstrated skills: in conducting appropriate relationships with students to enhance their acclimation to college and academic success; in developing ideas for unit programs that promote success; in collaborating with faculty and staff across department and division lines. Must display excellent writing and speaking abilities.
